How to Run Windows Updation

"Windows Update" is an utility provided by Microsoft to help end users to check & install the latest security patches on their Windows desktop. Users are advised to apply these critical security patches timely for their desktop to prevent any cyber attack in making use of these Microsoft vulnerabilities.

Run Windows Update Manually

To run Windows Update manually, please repeat the following steps periodically on your desktop to check for any new updates from Microsoft.
  1. Start Internet Explorer.
  2. Select Windows Update under Tools menu and then follow the instructions.
  3. Install at least Critical Update and all the updates for Internet Explorer.
  4. Install other updates if necessary.

Users are advised to enable the Automatic Window Update so that your computer will get the latest critical patches from Microsoft automatically. Alternatively, you can perform Microsoft update via the following link:

http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/

Automate Windows Update

Automate Updates for Windows XP SP2
To turn on the automatic update function on Windows XP SP2:
  1. Open Control Panel
  2. Click Security Center.
  3. Select Automatic Updates.
  4. Select your preferred settings according to your needs and then click OK
  5. Click OK to close the Windows Firewall window.
  6. Close Windows Security Center.
  7. Important: For first time turning on the Automatic Update feature, please visit Microsoft Windows Update web site to make sure you have all the latest updates available from Microsoft at that time. Automatic Update will only help you to download any future updates but not the existing one for your computer.

Automate Updates for Windows 2000 / XP
Users can automate the Windows Update task if you are using Windows 2000 / XP or above. To turn on the automatic update function:
  1. Open Control Panel
  2. - For Windows 2000 users, open Automatic Updates.

  3. - For Windows XP users:
    1. Open System (or System under Performance and Maintenance if you are using Category View)
    2. Click on the Automatic Updates tab
  4. Check the Keep my computer up to date check-box.
  5. Select your preferred settings according to your needs and then click OK :

    • Notify me before downloading any updates and notify me again...

    • - For this option, an icon with a message will appear on your screen to notify you that a new update is available. You can then download and install it on your computer by following the on-screen instructions. 

    •  Download the updates automatically and notify me when they are ready to be installed
      - This option will download the updates automatically for you. After the download is completed, an icon with a message will then appear on your screen to prompt you if you'd like to install the new updates. You can then click on the New updates are ready to install icon and install the latest Windows Updates on your computer.


       

    • Automatically download the updates, and install then on the schedule ...

    • - This option can download and install any new updates for you automatically and you will need to specify a schedule for the installation. 
       
  7.
